Mutulu Shakur: Release Granted on Medical Grounds
On November 10, 2022, the U.S. Parole Commission granted the release of Tupac's stepfather Mutulu Shakur. The 72-year-old suffers from bone marrow cancer.
In May, doctors had given him six months, according to attorney Brad Thomson. On November 10, 2022, the U.S. Parole Commission confirmed that Dr. Mutulu Shakur, Tupac’s stepfather, would be released early from prison on health grounds, as The Intercept reported. The 72-year-old suffers from bone marrow cancer and is to spend his final days with his family in Southern California.
Too Infirm for Further Crimes
Following a hearing in October, the commission wrote that his condition made him so “infirm of mind and body” that he could no longer commit a crime. It had previously denied requests, according to Vibe including in 2016 and in April 2022.
More Than 36 Years in Prison After the Brink’s Robbery
Mutulu Shakur was sentenced in 1988 to 60 years for the 1981 Brink’s robbery and had served more than 36 years. “It is tragic that it took until he was on the verge of death,” Thomson said.
On the release itself: Mutulu Shakur released.
