FX Orders Tupac Series “Outlaw” from Allen Hughes
Five parts on Tupac and Afeni Shakur: US network FX announces the docuseries by Allen Hughes-the project was ultimately released in 2023 as “Dear Mama”.
On August 6, 2019, the US cable network FX announced its first documentary slate. One of the projects is a five-part series on Tupac and his mother Afeni Shakur, directed by Allen Hughes. Rolling Stone and Billboard reported.
Shaped by the Black Panthers
The working title was Outlaw: The Saga of Afeni and Tupac Shakur. The press release describes the two as the “most inspiring and dangerous mother-son duo in American history,” whose message of freedom, equality, and justice is more relevant than ever. Afeni was a member of the Black Panther Party and, as Rolling Stone recalled, the inspiration for Tupac’s 1995 single Dear Mama.
“Outlaw” Became “Dear Mama” in 2023
Alongside the Tupac project, the slate includes Hip Hop Untold, Pride, and A Wilderness of Error, among others. FX did not announce premiere dates at the time. The series was ultimately released in 2023 under the title Dear Mama.
