Tupac's Letter to Madonna Goes to Auction
Madonna lost in court, and now the letter went to auction: Gotta Have Rock and Roll set a $100,000 starting bid for Tupac's lines from prison.
On January 15, 1995, Tupac wrote three pages to Madonna from prison. In July 2019, the letter went up for sale. As Rolling Stone and NME reported on July 11, the auction house Gotta Have Rock and Roll set a starting bid of $100,000. According to Rolling Stone, the house expected $200,000 to $300,000; the magazine gave July 17 as the date.
Madonna’s Lawsuit Fails Over a 2004 Release
The road to the auction was long. In 2017, a judge halted the auction after Madonna declared that her celebrity did not cancel out her right to privacy. Only in June 2019 did an appeals court in New York rule that, because of a 2004 release, she could take action against neither her former art consultant Darlene Lutz nor the auction house. The letter was part of a collection that Lutz was selling.
Lines in Case “Something Happens” to Him
In the letter, Tupac apologizes: he had not been the friend he was capable of being. He also writes that he is setting down his feelings in case “something happens” to him. A year and a half later, he was dead.
