"The Hate U Give": Tupac's Thug Life Formula Shapes Film and Soundtrack
Tupac's Thug Life formula becomes a film title: Def Jam releases the soundtrack to 'The Hate U Give' on October 12, 2018, including Tupac recordings.
“The Hate U Give Little Infants Fucks Everybody”: That was how Tupac once unpacked the acronym for Thug Life. According to Rolling Stone, the phrasing came from a rap. In October 2018, the film The Hate U Give (directed by George Tillman Jr., 20th Century Fox) was released, its title drawn directly from this interpretation. According to The Source, it deals with racially charged experiences of young Black people, police violence, and the killing of innocent people.
Def Jam Brings Tupac to the Soundtrack
On October 12, Def Jam released the soundtrack. Citing Def Jam executive Rich Isaacson (speaking to Variety), The Source reports that Tupac tracks were also included because the film’s title traces back to his Thug Life code. The participating artists include Jadakiss, Travis Scott, Pusha T, Kendrick Lamar, Bobby Sessions, and Logic. Which Tupac tracks these are is not mentioned in the reviewed sources.
