Tupac's breakup letter to Madonna heads to auction

A letter from his cell: why Tupac broke up with Madonna in 1995, and how the document went up for auction in 2017 for over $100,000.

On January 15, 1995, at 4:30 a.m., Tupac wrote to Madonna from prison. On July 5, 2017, the letter became known; Rolling Stone confirmed its authenticity. The Guardian placed the letter in the context of Tupac’s imprisonment in New York. In it, Tupac explains why he had ended the relationship.

Tupac Feared for His Image

The breakup reportedly had to do with her race, in terms of his “image” at the time. He felt he had to fear disappointing half of the people who had made him. He also writes: “I never meant to hurt you.” And he offers her friendship.

More Than $100,000 Expected

The letter was to be auctioned at the Gotta Have Rock and Roll auction from July 19 to 28. More than $100,000 was expected. The page on Madonna describes the relationship. What happened in court afterward is recounted in Madonna blocks the auction.
