“Greatest Hits” Back in the Top 40 After Theatrical Release

Theatrical release takes effect: With “Greatest Hits” at No. 31, Tupac returns to the Billboard 200 top 40 for the first time since December 2006.

The theatrical release made an immediate impact on the charts: on the Billboard 200 dated July 8, 2017, Tupac’s compilation Greatest Hits jumped from No. 73 to No. 31. The album reached 18,000 units (up 101 percent), including 5,000 copies sold (up 65 percent). Billboard attributes the rise to the attention generated by the film All Eyez on Me, which had opened on June 16.

First Time Back in the Top 40 Since 2006

This put Tupac back in the top 40 for the first time in more than ten years. He had last accomplished this in December 2006 with the album Pac’s Life, which debuted at No. 9 and fell to No. 30 in its second week. According to Billboard, Greatest Hits is Tupac’s best-selling album since the beginning of Nielsen tracking, with 5.33 million copies sold in the US. In January 1999, the album reached No. 3 and spent a total of 196 weeks on the charts.
