Between 'Trash' and Defense: The Rap Scene Debates 'All Eyez on Me'

50 Cent ranted, MC Hammer defended, Scarface missed friends: How the biopic 'All Eyez on Me' divided the rap scene after its release.

On June 16, 50 Cent delivered a brief verdict on Instagram: he had seen ‘All Eyez on Me,’ the film was ‘trash,’ and people should rather watch it on a stream. According to AllHipHop, he later deleted several posts about it. Even so, the film continued to occupy the scene for days after its release.

Hammer and The Game Push Back

On the other side, MC Hammer and The Game defended the film. Hammer called it a truthful portrayal of a person he loved. The Game sharply rebuked the critics.

Missing Key Companions

Scarface, a former friend, criticized something else: key companions were missing. He named MC Breed and The D.O.C. and said, in effect, that without them it was not a real Tupac film. Furthermore, the project had not been approved by the people who grew up with Tupac.

Billboard summed up the mood as mixed reactions online. Jada Pinkett Smith had already objected on opening day (see her criticism).
