Tupac's estate after Afeni's death: trust and trustee Tom Whalley
Afeni Shakur had made provisions: how Tom Whalley continues to manage Tupac's estate and the "California Love Trust" secures the work.
When Afeni Shakur died, the question immediately arose on May 4, 2016, as to what this meant for Tupac’s estate. Afeni’s attorney Howard King clarified to Billboard: The estate was largely unaffected and would continue to be run by Tom Whalley. Her wishes would be “honored”.
A confidant from the Interscope days runs the trust
At the time, Whalley headed Loma Vista, was formerly head of Warner Bros. Records, and knew Tupac from their time together at Interscope. He had already been appointed trustee in 2013.
Afeni secured the work in the “California Love Trust”
Vibe and AllHipHop reported that Afeni had secured her son’s work in advance in a trust called the “California Love Trust”. According to TMZ, a representative said she had planned carefully and named an executor. The sources rely here on statements from the estate and on TMZ.
The move had a lead-up: As early as March 2015, the firm JAM Inc. had announced a “reset” of the estate (report). More on the family: Family.
