John Singleton leaves the Tupac biopic, Carl Franklin takes over

First "on hold"then the exit: Singleton accuses those involved of lacking respect for Tupac's legacy. Carl Franklin takes over, for now.

The script and the family’s blessing were in place, and John Singleton had already directed Tupac in Poetic Justice. Even so, the director put the brakes on the Tupac biopic in early April 2015. He told XXL magazine that he was putting his involvement on hold until it was “right”.

No Respect for Tupac’s Legacy

A few days later, on April 7, he announced on Instagram that he was no longer doing the film. The reasons: “the people involved aren’t really respectful of the legacy of Tupac Amaru Shakur”. Singleton announced that he would pursue a project of his own.

Carl Franklin Takes Over, and Leaves in November

Billboard and Rolling Stone reported director Carl Franklin (Out of Time, House of Cards) as his successor. AllHipHop wrote that shooting was slated for August or September. Yet Franklin did not stay: by late November, he was out as well, see Benny Boom takes over directing.

The film did not come out until 2017 as All Eyez on Me.
