Tupac Biopic: Filming Start Announced for June 2015
Producer Randall Emmett announces filming to begin in June: with Afeni Shakur on board and music rights secured, the Tupac biopic gets a fresh start.
After years of standstill, things were now set to move quickly: producer Randall Emmett told the website Collider in mid-January 2015 that filming on the Tupac film was scheduled to begin in June. The script was “great,” he said, and they were only taking care of logistics. According to Rolling Stone, the production company Morgan Creek acquired the rights to the music catalog after partnering with Tupac’s mother, Afeni Shakur. Afeni is among the executive producers.
“Real and Raw” with Original Music
Emmett described the film as the story of Tupac’s origins and his environment, with the focus on his rise to stardom. The goal was to be “real and raw,” also regarding the gangster life, but equally to honor his talent. In addition, he announced the conflict between the East and West Coast. Vibe highlighted that, unlike in the Aaliyah biopic, the original music would be heard in the film.
The Cameras Only Rolled in December
The June date did not hold: filming did not begin until December 2015, see the report on the start of filming. The finished film finally arrived in theaters in 2017 as All Eyez on Me.
