Tupac and James Brown on the "Django Unchained" Soundtrack

Tupac's hook meets James Brown's classic: Claudio Cueni mixed the mashup "Unchained" for Quentin Tarantino's western "Django Unchained".

Tupac and James Brown on a single track: When the tracklist for the soundtrack to Quentin Tarantino’s western Django Unchained was announced on November 29, 2012, “Unchained (The Payback/Untouchable)” stood out. The piece combines James Brown’s classic “The Payback” with a hook by Tupac from his song “Untouchable”.

Claudio Cueni at the Mixing Desk

Tupac’s former sound engineer Claudio Cueni was responsible for the mix. Additional contributions came from artists including John Legend, Rick Ross, and Anthony Hamilton-marking the first songs written specifically for a Tarantino film.

From the Web to Theaters

On December 10, Rolling Stone premiered the song, and Complex linked to it. The soundtrack was released on December 18. The film opened in theaters on December 25 in the United States and on January 17, 2013, in Germany. Rolling Stone Germany and Musikexpress reported on it as well.

The song shows how Tupac’s voice continues to be placed in new contexts years after his death. An overview of all releases: discography.
