VH1 Documentary Shows Tupac's Outburst on 'Yo! MTV Raps'

Billboard previews a clip from the VH1 documentary on 'Yo! MTV Raps': Tupac's 1993 interview that landed him in jail for 15 days shortly afterward.

On May 31, 2012, Billboard exclusively released a clip from Yo: The Story of Yo! MTV Raps, a documentary about the hip-hop show that VH1 aired on June 7. The clip leads back to Tupac’s appearance, broadcast on July 16, 1993-and to a statement with legal repercussions.

Brawl After Being Fired from ‘Menace II Society’

Host Ed Lover brought up the dispute with the Hughes brothers, who had fired him from the film Menace II Society. On camera, Tupac said in essence that they had fired him in a sneaky way. That was why he beat them up in the street, and that the matter was not over.

The Recording as Evidence in Court

The Hughes brothers later used the recording as evidence in the case. Tupac spent 15 days in jail. The documentary includes interviews with the three hosts Fab 5 Freddy, Ed Lover, and Doctor Dré, as well as Rakim, Big Boi, and Questlove.

The incident exemplifies how Tupac’s own words were used against him in court (more under legal cases).
