"Shakurspeare": Tupac's Earliest Raps from Baltimore Set to Be Released
Recorded in 1988 on cassette, when Tupac was still MC New York: His school friend Darrin Keith Bastfield announced the album Shakurspeare in 2009.
Before he went by Tupac or 2Pac, he rapped in Baltimore as MC New York. The recordings that Darrin Keith Bastfield announced in July 2009 date back to this period. The album Shakurspeare was scheduled to be released digitally on September 13, the anniversary of Tupac’s death, on Bastfield’s label Born Busy Records.
A Cassette from 1988
Bastfield and Tupac had co-founded the group Born Busy together when Tupac began rapping at 16. In 1988, they recorded the vocals for the album unaccompanied onto cassette. For the release, they were isolated, digitally processed and backed with music created in 2008, featuring Baltimore musicians such as jazz singer Maysa.
The title alludes to a conversation in which the 17-year-old Tupac said he dreamed of becoming a well-known Shakespearean actor. The cover features an oil painting by Bastfield: Tupac as Shakespeare. According to Bastfield’s recollection, Tupac heard himself rap for the first time in the cafeteria of the Baltimore School for the Arts.
It was Bastfield’s second Tupac project. In 2002, he had published his memoirs as a book: Back in the Day: My Life and Times with Tupac Shakur.
