Afeni Shakur Establishes a Scholarship in Her Mother's Name
10,000 dollars for Robeson Community College: In April 2003, Afeni Shakur set up a scholarship named after Tupac's grandmother Rosa Bell Williams.
On April 8, 2003, Afeni Shakur presented Robeson Community College in North Carolina with a check for 10,000 dollars. Beforehand, she had given an interview to the college’s cable television program. With the money, she established a scholarship in the name of the Tupac Amaru Foundation that bears the name of Tupac’s grandmother: Rosa Bell Williams. AllHipHop reported on it the following day, drawing on the Fayetteville Observer.
A Place for Robeson County
The scholarship was to go once a year to someone from Robeson County, the area where the family comes from; their place of origin is Lumberton. Afeni Shakur told the Observer that she thought highly of community colleges, as not everyone could afford a large university. For many, college was the first step toward an education. With the scholarship, she also wanted to honor her mother’s wish to make her children’s lives better.
Golf for Soldiers’ Families
In Lumberton, Afeni Shakur also hosted the charity tournament “James ‘Head’ Lassiter Swing for Kids” every year in November. According to the report, proceeds from the 2003 tournament were to benefit families of soldiers from Lumberton. More on the foundation’s work: TASF and Stone Mountain.
