"Thug Angel": Documentary About Tupac Released on DVD and Video

The documentary film Thug Angel: The Life of an Outlaw was released on DVD and video in April 2002, as Musikexpress announced in its news ticker on April 2. It was distributed by Image Entertainment. It was directed by Peter Spirer.

From the Panther Household to Marin City

The 92-minute film combines interviews with Tupac with voices of people who knew him. It recounts his childhood with a mother from the Black Panther movement, the Baltimore School for the Arts, and the move to Marin City, contrasting this with the image of the gangsta rapper. Those featured include Quincy Jones, Treach of Naughty by Nature, and Tupac’s stepfather Mutulu Shakur, who was incarcerated.

The trade publication Video Librarian called the film “an excellent portrait” in July 2002 and expressly recommended it. In July, the CD Thug Angel: The Life of an Outlaw was also released. The video was certified platinum in the USA in 2005.
