Groundbreaking for the Tupac Arts Center in Stone Mountain
In August 2001, construction began in Stone Mountain (Georgia) on an art center in Tupac's name, with a stage, gallery, and memorial garden.
In Stone Mountain in the US state of Georgia, construction has begun on an arts center in Tupac’s name. On Saturday, August 11, 2001, Tupac’s family and politicians from DeKalb County gathered for the groundbreaking, as AllHipHop reported. At that time, the family had been living in Stone Mountain for almost ten years.
Stage, Gallery, Garden
The Tupac Amaru Shakur Center for the Arts was planned with a performing arts studio, an art gallery, and a garden meant to commemorate Tupac and other victims of violence. Initially, the walls were to feature pictures that fans had sent to Afeni Shakur. The opening was scheduled for March 2003.
Afeni Shakur called the center “a reason to give our children hope, instead of being in pain.” A few weeks later, on the fifth anniversary of his death, AllHipHop showed initial building plans. How the foundation and center progressed is recounted on the page The Tupac Amaru Shakur Foundation and the Arts Center in Stone Mountain.
