"Remember Me": Afeni Shakur Speaks at the University in Madison

In April 2001, the University of Wisconsin in Madison announced a lecture by Afeni Shakur on Tupac's legacy and a keynote at a hip-hop conference.

Tupac’s mother visited colleges in the spring of 2001. In early April, the University of Wisconsin in Madison announced that Afeni Shakur would speak at the Wisconsin Union Theater on Sunday, April 22, at 7:30 p.m. Her lecture was titled “Remember Me: The Living Legacy of Tupac Shakur” and was part of the Distinguished Lectures series. For mid-April, the series also announced consumer advocate and former presidential candidate Ralph Nader.

Personal Struggles, Openly Told

The university presented the former Black Panther activist as a speaker who talks about her own path to peace and self-determination. She speaks about her successes and just as openly about her difficulties so that others might overcome their own. Tickets were available starting April 17.

Keynote Address Before Young Activists

On April 12, the university reported a second role for her: The group Hip Hop Generation invited people to its second conference, “Hip Hop As A Movement,” from April 20 to 22. The topics were political engagement among young people, the global influence of hip-hop, and the relationship between young and old in civil rights work. Afeni Shakur was scheduled to deliver the keynote address, “The Living Legacy of Tupac Shakur,” and also meet with students from Madison, Milwaukee, and Chicago.
