"Makaveli Part 2": A Bootleg with Outlawz Songs Surfaces

18 tracks, 70 minutes, no label: In early 1998, retailers in several US cities sold a bootleg containing unreleased Tupac recordings.

In early February 1998, MTV News reported on the season’s most sought-after bootleg: Makaveli Part 2, a collection of 18 tracks and roughly 70 minutes of unreleased recordings and interview snippets. It had been spotted at relevant retailers in New York, Detroit, Chicago, Oakland, and Los Angeles.

Who Owned the Songs

Many tracks featured Tupac’s proteges The Outlawz, while some tracklists included the names of musicians Tupac attacked in the songs. Legally, the situation was convoluted: Afeni Shakur’s label Amaru owned the rights to nearly all of her son’s unreleased recordings, but many of the songs on the bootleg still belonged to Death Row because they had been recorded for an Outlawz album.

A spokesperson for Death Row said they were aware of the pressing; most of the tracks would appear on the Outlawz album, scheduled for the spring.
