"2pac Shakur: A Seminar": The University of Wyoming Offers a Tupac Course
After Berkeley, now Laramie: In January 1998, 66 students enrolled in a seminar on Tupac's life, music, films, and poetry.
Tupac became material for the lecture hall, and not just in California. MTV News reported on January 9, 1998, that the University of Wyoming was offering a course titled “2pac Shakur: A Seminar.” It was set to cover his life, his music, and his films, as well as his poetry.
66 Enrollments, Room for 77
By the time of the report, 66 students had enrolled, and eleven spots were still open. MTV dryly commented, Wyoming of all places, and pointed to the precedent: at the University of California, Berkeley, an entire course on Tupac’s poetry had been running since the fall of 1997.
How universities have engaged with Tupac since then, from seminars to archives, is described on the page Academic Reception. For the course in Berkeley, there is an article in the magazine: Tupac in the Lecture Hall.
