Snoop Doggy Dogg: Tupac Taught Me to Be a Workaholic
Why another album so soon? In March 1997, Snoop Doggy Dogg told MTV News that he picked up his work pace from Tupac.
Half a year after Tupac’s death, Snoop Doggy Dogg spoke with host John Norris at MTV’s “Spring Break ‘97.” MTV News reported on it on March 27, 1997. Norris wanted to know why Snoop wanted to release another album as early as July 4, so shortly after Tha Doggfather from the previous November.
“He Was a Workaholic”
The answer led straight back to Tupac. Snoop said that he learned that from his “homeboy,” that Tupac was a “workaholic.” He said Tupac showed him and everyone around him how to focus on working without watching the clock. If an album sounds good, you should put it out. There is no such thing as a perfect album, only work and what the people want to hear.
A Role Model from the Studio
The two had been in the studio together at Death Row in 1996, including for 2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted. Now Snoop wanted to adopt his late friend’s pace as his own and give fans new music faster rather than polish an album for a long time. MTV News also reported that he would go on tour in the spring of 1997 with Dr. Dre, Lil’ Kim, Foxy Brown, and Dru Hill; the tour had previously been postponed.
