Raid in Compton: Orlando Anderson Arrested and Released

Over 300 officers, 23 arrests: In an October 2, 1996 Compton raid, the man from the MGM brawl was also caught. He was not charged.

Before sunrise on October 2, 1996, more than 300 officers from eleven agencies searched homes in Compton and the surrounding area. The raid targeted a series of shootings that informants described as retaliation for the shooting of Tupac. 23 people were arrested, two investigators from Las Vegas were present.

The Man from the Hotel Video

Among those arrested was Orlando Anderson, 22, of Lakewood. His attorney Edi M.O. Faal confirmed the following day that Anderson was the man whom Tupac and his companions had attacked in the lobby of the MGM Grand hours before the shooting. His client had nothing to do with the attack. Las Vegas police stated that Anderson was not a suspect “at this time”.

Anderson had been arrested in connection with another homicide at an April party and an attempted murder in September. He was already free by the evening of October 2; on October 4, prosecutors declined to file charges in both cases. More about the brawl at the hotel: The Brawl at the MGM Grand. How suspicion against him later unfolded is shown in Suspects in the Tupac Murder Case.
