One Hour in Custody: Tupac Violates His Probation Conditions

Tupac had not reported for 15 days of road duty: On January 22, 1996, a judge had him arrested. After one hour, he was free on bail.

Three months after his release from custody in New York, Tupac Shakur stood before a judge again on January 22, 1996. Gregory Alarcon of the Municipal Court in Los Angeles had him taken into custody because he had not fulfilled his probation conditions: by this Monday, he was supposed to have completed 15 days with a work crew of the California Department of Transportation, Caltrans. He had not started.

Bail of 52,000 Dollars

The probation stemmed from two convictions in Los Angeles, for a concealed weapon (1993) and for assault (1994). After one hour, Tupac was free again on 52,000 dollars bail. His attorney Shawn Chapman announced that he would begin the work immediately.

The matter was not over yet. For February 14, the court scheduled a hearing on whether he had also violated probation through an arrest with a pistol in Hollywood in April 1994 and a conviction in Michigan. In October 1995, Death Row Records had posted 1.4 million dollars to get him out of custody. The background is recounted on the page Other Proceedings 1991 to 1996.
