Afeni Shakur had asked Staci Robinson to write her son’s life story and gave her access to the family and to his personal papers. The two had known each other since high school in Marin County and stayed in touch until Tupac’s death. More than 25 years after his death, the result appeared in 2023: the first biography explicitly authorized by his estate. Robinson also worked as a writer and executive producer on the FX docuseries Dear Mama about Afeni and Tupac.

Lyrics, Notebooks, and Private Memories
Robinson recounts Tupac’s life from childhood to his death in Las Vegas. In doing so, she places the emphasis on his ambition, his work ethic, his disdain for authority, and family life.
The distinctive feature lies in the source material: the book features reproductions of handwritten lyrics, track lists, notes, and sketches from Tupac’s notebooks, supplemented by memories from his inner circle. According to Kirkus Reviews, the details range from his love of Mariah Carey’s music to high school poems for Jada Pinkett to his relationship with Madonna.
Close Ties to the Family, Little New on the Shootings
As an authorized biography rich in material, the work brings both advantages and drawbacks. Closeness to the family opened archives no one else had access to, and the book paints a warm, personal portrait. Kirkus praised its intimacy, but felt it lacked weight and depth.
The volume offers little new on the 1994 and 1996 shootings or the East-West conflict, and according to some critics, the music receives short shrift. Overall, the reviews were predominantly positive. For anyone looking to know Tupac through his own writings, it is today one of the essential books. More titles: Books.
